In the sixties, I was a relief night auditor at the Hillside Motor Lodge—one of the first motels to be remodeled to look more like a hotel by adding a large public space for guests. My job was to handle the front desk between eleven at night and seven in the morning. I checked guests in, kept the books by hand, then put out a small breakfast first thing in the morning. The toughest part of being a relief night auditor was staying awake . . . something I wasn’t always good at. One night, a guy and a woman came in, and they were both pretty drunk. I’d lived in the area long enough to recognize that he was the president of the local bank, and something of a local celebrity. I also was smart enough to know that the woman with him was not his wife. That was one night when I didn’t have any trouble staying awake.
